Celtic v Rangers is a whole different animal, not only in NI but in Scotland. It may be less religious now, however since Celtic has accepted Protestants and Rangers (more reluctantly) Catholics. Football stuff can get crazy anywhere, especially when other factors are involved: Lazio v Roma (politics), Sporting v Benfica (class) and Liverpool v Everton (too close to each other). I imagine the fight quotient goes up in Rome, Lisbon and Merseyside in the bars after all of those games, too.

Never thought I'd see the Old Firm discussed here. Liverpool vs Everton doesn't bear comparison with that. It's much more jovial and tongue in cheek. They don't even have crowd segregation at a Liverpool derby.
Closest thing to the Old Firm rivalry outside Glasgow would be with the London clubs, eg Millwall and West Ham, maybe City and United in Manchester.
I've never seen a catfight at a football match. It was strictly "men vs men" in my experience, back in the day.
But I've heard that Blackpool FC had a hard core gang of young female fans back in the 70's who followed the team everywhere and would pick fights with local girls in pubs and bars after the matches.

Celtic Vs Rangers!!!!! Let these two fight it out!!!!
