In Spain we use that word for describe the nerds that wear costume of films, comics, videogames...

Usually they are people that wear really elaborate costumes (like custom made that look like the "real" thing) and then act like the characters they are playing.  A little different than just costumes.  They will act out their interactions with each other as the characters they are portraying.  Basically the difference between two women dressed as vampires at a halloween getting into a fight vs. them play acting out a fight as if they were vampires (hissing, going for a bite vs. a punch, etc.)
I love catfights and chatting.  Look me up on trillian at ljack66   (I think... just figuring Trillian out)   https://www.deviantart.com/ljack66

Thanks for the definition.  I always referred to them as "people in need of a life."

Cosplay, a portmanteau of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear self-made costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.

Some of these costumes are very elaborate.  It is amazing the amount of detail some people put on these outfits.  There are some girls who make a lot of money doing this, esp in Japan.

Some examples:

while a lot of people think and say these cosplayers need a life, you might want to understand that a lot of these people who do this seriously make a LOT of MONEY to appear, make the costumes and more so while oyu laugh at them keep in mind most of them own their own homes and drive very nice vehicles and tour the world
