Skirts

The amusement parks of the 50s and 60s didn't have hi tech rides that give an instant adrenalin rush. They did have a fun house which, when you made your way through, had rooms with sloping floors, walls that weren't square and mirrors that distorted your image.  In one of these house there was a slightly raised walkway adjoining one room to another and this was within sight of the passing public.  Crowds would gather as the fun house ladies provided innocent entertainment. As they walked across the gantry, compressed air shoots upwards and lifts the ladies skirts, hopefully revealing their underwear.  Film of that era had the same idea.  Any catfight would require the ladies to battle with skirts riding high, showing their legs.  The Carry On films knew the value of this.  In my opinion the best fight happened in Carry on Camping. The shot shows the pupils sitting room of a private girls school.  Excited girls cheer and encourage as two pupils played by Barbara Wibdsor and Anna Karen are fighting.  Barbara is driven back an falls in a chair, legs art as her skirt flies up to show her knickers and suspenders.  As Barbara climbs out she grabs at an escaping Karen, catching her skirt and revealing Karen's knickers.   Although a comedy the fight was played straight and had everything which is exciting about a girl fight.
A lady once told me that women got a thrill if they saw up another's skirt, indeed you often hear them saying 'she was showing all she'd got'. A fight on the net showed girls on a drunken night out.  One was on the ground, her opponent facing her, her ight skirt had ridden up above her hips in the struggle. Both were showing all they'd got. The view must have been a thrill and a boost to both ladies as they came back together to continue their scrap.

While the ideal is for both women to wear skirts the excellent fight in 'Who Dares Wins'  (one woman in slacks) was made even more thrilling when sexy Ingrid Pitt showed her stocking tops as she struggled on the floor.
The biggest disappointment, and I still feel cheated, was 'Irma La Douce'.  The build up couldn't have been better.  Shirley McLean kicks a women in the butt and sends her sprawling.  The lady gets up and Shirley finds herself on the floor. The two leggy ladies are nose to nose glaring at each other. Shelley removes her opponents sun glasses and break them. This is the point when it kicks off.  Both ladies grab hair and disappear out of shot.  We can hear the noise of the fight but can only see Jack Lemon shooting soda at them.   If that's not a reason to claim the ticket price back....  I wonder how many catfight fans were excited by the build up and let down badly.

Presenterfan, that sounds like the ultimate cutaway from an otherwise fantastic catfight.  I think cutaways have been a real sore spot for catfight fans ever since movie catfights were first done.

I agree wasteland, Get Carter and Kitty and the Bagman springs to mind as two of my favourite and yet equally disappointing catfght scenes because of the damn cutaways. It seems the producers deliberately play a game of 'now you see it now you don't'
