Title: A trip down memory lane – 50 years of catfighting/wrestling memorabilia
Post by: wrstlvr on September 30, 2014, 07:48:31 AM
Hi everyone,
I indicate in my profile that I've been obsessed with women's wrestling for half a century.  Well, my friends, I'm not exaggerating.  I've been cleaning up my basement and as I was going through some old boxes, I found my treasure chests (5 boxes full) of women's wrestling and catfighting memorabilia going back nearly 50 years.  I hadn't opened these boxes in at least 20 years (well, at least since the internet became mainstream) and had forgotten how much stuff I had accumulated, especially from the 70s and 80s, although my oldest items are my two prized "Girl Wrestling" magazines from 1965.  That was towards the end of the "Golden Era" of women's professional wrestling.  I have attached a picture of one of them below just to show you what they look like.
In the coming weeks, I'll be going through my boxes of magazines, brochures, pamphlets, booklets, catalogs, 8mm movies, BETA and VHS videocassettes, photos and more, mostly from the 70s and 80s eras, and even a couple of copies of the AM-FEM Women's Amateur Wrestling Directory, for those of you who may remember that publication.  I'll take some pics and will talk a bit about some of what I have.  Many are from companies that you probably never even heard of (e.g.: Superior Studios, Impact Productions, NEWAWA), and some are from well-known companies (California Supreme, Bellstone, Triumph Studios, Curtis Dupont, DWW, Golden Girls, etc.), but when they were just starting.  Others were very good in my opinion but, for some reason, didn't seem to be as popular (Lady Hawke and Video Sports Limited come to mind).

Think about it for a second; no internet until the early 90s...  In the 70s and 80s, everything was delivered by mail.  We had to buy a magazine, cut out a clipping advertising a company that sold women's fighting movies and or pictures, send it along with a money order, then, wait 6-8 weeks for a catalog or pamphlet to arrive, usually in black and white.  After browsing through it and selecting a movie (reel-to-reel 8mm movies with no sound in the 70s; BETA or VHS cassettes in the 80s) or a photo set, we'd send another money order and wait another 6-8 weeks for delivery.  It could easily take 3 to 4 months to obtain some of the material.  Talk about being patient.  Oh, BTW, I live in Canada, so that may explain some of the delay.  But today, if a movie doesn't download within 5 minutes, the client writes up a complaint...

I used to go to bookstores in the 70s and early 80s and browse the mainstream pro wrestling magazines, and if a magazine had an article on women's wrestling, any article, I'd buy it.  Although I wasn't impressed by fake apartment house wrestling, it was popular then, so I'd buy the magazine anyway because there was not much else to choose from.  The result: I probably have a few hundred pro wrestling magazines from the 70s and 80s stacked in my boxes.  Many look brand new.  I recall The Ring Wrestling magazine as being pretty good at highlighting women's pro wrestling.   I'll take a few pics later to demonstrate this.  And yes, I even have some of those Cavalier magazines that were famous for their catfight pictorials.

Just for fun, I'll keep this thread going by rummaging through my stuff, and posting a few pictures that I'll take once in a while of what I have, and provide a bit of background just to demonstrate some of the "old school" stuff that I pulled out.  If you're reading this Rockin' Roxanne, you'll probably get a kick out of it.

For example, anybody remember sexy catfighter Lori from B&J Enterprises, or how about Brandy Law and Sheri Whitlow (before her days at California Supreme) at Sundance Studios, or Ealer-Dayton's Ali Day against Patti Austin?  If you don't, then I'm way too old for this forum.

Ok then, how about Joan Wise's glossy black & white brochures called "Fighting Femmes" with the likes of Helen Lustgarden and Jan Hefner.  This was before the days of Treena Collins, Robin and all those other sexy catfighters from Joan Wise and the spinoff Jaguar Videos.

Oh, and I really had a crush on those California girls at Judell DuLong's Amazon Club.  Cute blonde Liz Melez (she really tried hard, but rarely won), the Skarvan sisters (especially Nancy), nervous Laurie Hatch, smiling Cindy Brooks, tough as nails Treena Antonelli just to name a few, and of course, the boss herself, the legendary Judell DuLong.  I have a snap shot of her somewhere, standing beside her car (a Buick Regal or Grand National, I think) wearing a T-shirt that says "Wanna wrestle".  Gotta love it!!  She sent, by mail, pages and pages of matches, all inscribed by typewriter, with the title, price and a long detailed description of the girls, what they wore, what they were thinking, the match itself, along with sample snap shots in colour, just as if you'd had taken them with your own camera.  When you ordered a movie or picture set, she'd attach a hand-written thank you note.  It was like getting her autograph.  Geez, you know, I kept everything, even those notes..., in perfect condition as if she had written them yesterday.  I have at least one 8mm movie (yep, on a reel, with no sound) of an Amazon Club match that I had ordered from her, I remember one of the fighters as being Laurie Hatch.  BTW, I have a couple of pictures of Judell in action on my Profile page.  They were taken from the Net a while ago.

More recently, in the early 90s, Crystal published its magazine called "Catspats" that included stuff from the Hellfire Club (you can find some of those catfights online today).  I have a few editions of that magazine (example below) and other similar cat fighting magazines from roughly the same time that I'll show you later.

When I organize my stuff, my messages will be a bit more structured and I'll take a bunch of sample pictures to share with you.  Hope you'll enjoy them...

I have to say though, with the advent of the internet, everything changed dramatically, and for the better.  With fast and easy downloads, file sharing and streaming, Dailymotion, YouTube, XVideos, numerous fetish sites, forums and blogs, DeviantArt, the Female Fight Theatre, and tons more, including of course, the FCF, well..., it's a whole new world.  In the early days of the Internet, I do recall a gift from heaven in the form of a website called the Combative Woman's Web Site (xxxxxxxS) from IRL fighter Barbara that saw the light in 1992.  In my humble opinion, a turning point in opening up IRL women's wrestling at the time.  PLease correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that she started the Voice Verified concept with her "Barb's Corner".  Barb's site no longer exists, but to me, and I suspect many other, more mature fans of female wrestling and catfighting, that site was THE best site out there in the mid90s.  I looked forward to her regular updates in the Links section, where she explained in detail what the sites were about.  And more importantly, she wrote some interesting and intelligent advice to women on how to get started and what to expect in the world of private female fighting, the types of fights, the attire, etc. by walking through some of the scenarios, types of fights, risks, etc.  She broke it down into four main topics: Doing, Thinking, Watching and Talking.  You could sense that she was talking directly to the women who wanted to learn more about this unique "activity".   For those of you who never heard of the xxxxxxxS, there is a tribute site at https://sites.google.com/site/combativewomen/home.  It doesn't come close to the original site, but it contains some good extracts of what I mean about advice to help women enter the world of private female fighting.   Trust me... It's worth a look.  Just check out the section on "Doing" for fun.

Anyway, back to reality.  I'm thinking of selling most of my magazines and many of my older films, or trading them for DVDs or other items that any of you may wish to consider trading.  I have no idea how much my magazines are worth today.  I can figure that out later.  I'll list them eventually for those who may be interested.  Many are in excellent to mint condition.  As for the brochures, pamphlets and catalogs, I'm thinking of sharing them with my fellow members of the FCF who would be interested in this stuff, by giving them away.  The vast majority are in perfect condition.  We can talk about that a bit later.  Maybe some fun contests or draws.  I welcome your suggestions...

Stay tuned for the next update...  Um, ever heard of a Canadian company from Toronto called Soowandis?  Probably not...  Well, I'll show you one of their booklets, with pics of the fights.

Cheers from Wrstlvr.

A wonderful post. I can remember buying lady Wresling long ago as well!

I also re-read the legendary Barb's site - extraordinarily good writing from a highly intelligent woman. To think it wil son be teh tenth anniversary og her closing the site.

In a way I think Barb was way ahead of her time. I remember she was freelance consultant and lost some big work because she was " outed".

I think today she might well have been able to use her communications skills much more openly in social media and REALLY spread the womens recreational wrestling she cared so much about far and wide.

Great Post. It certainly brings back a lot of memories. I've been into the wrestling scene since the early days and can relate to all the names, magazine and clubs that you mention. In fact, I have met some of individuals personally.  Will look forward to future posts.

It will be cool to see some of your old stuff.  I had to pitch most of my stuff back in 2008 when we moved across country.

Real Nostalgia. Looking forward to future posts. Hey, do you remember the AM-FEM newsletter that was primarily for people who were interested in meeting other people to set up matches/meetings?

Outstanding post!! I too owned both of the Girl Wrestling magazines that came out in 1965.  Love the one that you have posted -- a classic -- with Karen Kellogg walking toward the camera and Lola LaRay headed back to her corner.

Like you, I purchased lots of pro wrestling magazines in the 60's and used the pictures to put together several scrapbooks of women's matches.   Great viewing.  Had them hidden way back in my closet.  All of that stuff went out when I got married.  Nice to know that some of it still survives.

And you are so right about Barb.  Not only did she provide women with a safe way to get into the sport, but she very unselfishly allowed us men to explore our feelings (and motives) regarding our passion / obsession with female wrestling and fighting.  My only regret is that I'll never be able to thank her in person.

Didn't one of those "Girl Wrestling" magazines feature an article on naked lady wrestlers from Berlin?  They did the black bar treatment over their privates but I would dearly love to see those
photos if you could scan them.  My buddy told me about them and I was always curious about them.

;D

Message to floon - I know about the article on naked wrestlers from Berlin.  It was not in one of the "Girl Wrestling" magazines.  I have it and when i find it, I'll scan the photos and post them for you.

Whoa!  I may need a lot more threads to go through my pile of stuff.  I also have to resize my pics so they don't exceed the 260KB limit per post.  Not easy...
Here are a few additional pics from the 1965 "Girl Wrestling" magazines.  The first pic is a copy of the other magazine that I have.  The second is a fold-out of the inside front cover with beautiful Penny Banner in trouble against Nell Stewart.

Here are a couple more from 1965...  The first is about the gorgeous Karen Kellogg.  She's the one walking towards you on the cover of my first magazine.  The second is an article that talks about banning matches with both "full grown" and midget female wrestlers.

OK.  A couple more from 1965 before I move on to other stuff.  The first is an article on strong woman Ada Ash.  The second is a back cover showing the top 10 pro wrestlers at the time.

Well, I'm back.  I was looking in my boxes for some of my older stuff to show you, and I found a whole whack of magazines mostly from the 80s and maybe early 90s that I had completely forgotten about.  I took 97 pictures tonight, but made the mistake of using my small Sony camera instead of my Nikon.  So guess what?  Some pictures are pretty bad, so I'll have to re-shoot them.  For tonight anyway, I'll start by showing you a few more cat fight magazines that I have.   I have to re-size each picture so they can fit my posts, and with the max of 260 KB per post, I'll have to limit my pics at 2 per post.  My first set is two magazines from the mid-70s.  If you followed apartment house wrestling in those days, you'll recognize most of the names.

I'm not being of much use to you if I only post pics without descriptions.  I'll get better.  For now, you may have been aware that California Supreme was affiliated with a company called Bellstone.  Sometimes called CSB, they produced some very good fights and cartoons.  Here are a few samples from the 70s.

Being from Canada, I speak both English and French. I have some french (Quebec) material as well.  The first is a wrestling magazine and the wording in red says: The women in the sport.  I even kept a "newspaper" on female wrestlers.  The third pic is from the newspaper.  It was a school for women's pro wrestling in Montreal.  Lise Raymond, the second girl from the right was a well known pro wrestler in Quebec.

The first is the intro to an article in one of my wrestling magazines.  The second is a magazine from 1975 on apartment house wrestling.  The third is a porn magazine with some wrestling.  Let me know if you'd like to see pics of what's inside the magazines that I post.  More to follow later, including mud wrestling.

Some fights from Catspats and a grudge match from Live...

I had that copy of Catspats! :D I remember the centre page spread was a catfight featuring Blake Mitchell versus a redhead. The pics for the photoshoot were posed, but she looked vicious and hot.

A great thread. Although I have a longstanding interest in female wrestling and catfights, it wasn't until the nineties as a twentysomething that I started to explore the companies providing materials for enthusiasts. This was right before the internet took off in a big way so like wrstlvr, it was all mail order so the wait for videos and magazines to arrive was all about the anticipation.

Magazines like Claws and Catspatz and even the catalogues (DWW used to send them regularly) were reassuringly seedy looking, like forbidden fruit. In all the time spent pouring over them, I began my education as to who these women were. It was always a delight to know that newspaper glamour models like Lynda Leigh, Louise Hodges and Teresa May participated and equally so in finding out the identity of women who appeared in videos, hence why the likes of Venus DeLight and Blake Mitchell have a place in my heart.

Sadly the magazines have long since gone, although I do have scanned pages from Claws magazine featuring Karen Partington (below).

The arrival of the internet made catfighting all the more accessible, more so with the advent of video sharing sites. It's easy to take the footing that it's all up for grabs but I still buy downloads from companies, even if I have a copy lifted from the internet. Case in point the nightclub oil wrestling match between Mutiny and Xana - the copy from Mutiny Wrestling is better quality, longer and more close to the action than it's bootleg counterpart.

For the benefit of fans outside of Europe and younger fans who may have never seen a copy of Amazons in Action I have posted a few of the mags front covers so you can get some idea of how far ahead of its time in pre internet days it was.
Pleased  to see a copy of Claws had survived though really it was a poor relation of A.I.A.and tended to deal mainly in fantasy.Swish Publications were the people behind both and the forerunner a almost pocket sized fetish magazine Accord which dedicated a small section to the female fight scene,In this section there were some times the odd photographer from fans claiming their wives were fighters, one that springs to mind was Mrs.P.H.whose face was never visible.
The other fore runner was a glossy covered handful of editions of Womens Wrestling which as far as I can recall lasted a very short time.

Thank you DavidUK and klaus for your input.  Glad to see you help me populate this thread.  Too bad there isn't a site where regular everyday women who don't mind sharing pics and descriptions of their IRL fights with other enthusiasts.  I understand the rationale for them not wanting to have their photos splashed across the net so pervs can jerk off while watching them.  Still, I'm pretty sure that some don't mind.  I will not give out the names, but I know of a few IRL fighters on the FCF who have posted some good pics on another website dedicated to fetishists.  I managed to find some other oldies from the 70s.  Here's a handout from Sundance Studios that came out in the mid 70s.  The early years of Sheri Whitlow.

Another update from the U.K.I mentioned before Accord magazine,a close inspection of the one illustrated here will reveal it's price at the time.Hard to believe but it was fifty pence!!!
Compare that to the later A.I.A.at eight pounds, which even today is a considerable amount of money, imagine the hole it made in a fans pocket in those days when the internet was a distant dream. This is possibly why the intention was to publish it as a quarterly, which made it even more difficult to follow as fans could rarely work out a publication date, this was particularly difficult for fans living outside the London area.A friend of mine even resorted to phoning Swish Publications to find a date and even more confusing they were unable to confirm a date for certain.

Thank you Klaus for adding more magazines.  Amazons in Action #80 looks pretty good.  Personal interviews of combative women, eh?  And floon, I don't have a Naked Berlin Wrestlers magazine, but I do remember having an article on this on one of my magazines.  I'm still looking, but I have a lot of magazines and little free time.  I'll find it though, I promise.

Meanwhile, if you like big girls, here's something from Violent Videos.  These were from the late 80s, I believe.  The hair styles may give it away...  Could have been a predecessor to Jaguar Videos.  I apologize for the poor quality.  I used my small Canon camera instead of my Nikon to take these.  Never again...  Anyway, check out 175 lb blond Marilyn and 148 lb Rona.  Then again, 115 lb Amy is sexy as hell but losing badly against 175 lb Blaze.  I could retake these photos later if anyone is interested.  You can barely read the text.

I mentioned that I am a fan of Judell DuLong and her Amazon Club.  These pics are from a 1975 wrestling magazine.  It's a match between Judell and Nancy Hogle.  I have a few more pics from this match that I'll add later.  Judell's determination shows in the pic of her before the match.  There she stands, hand on her hip, serious look, robe half open exposing her wrestling attire.  I love photos like this.

Great stuff.

It would be great to get all of this into a digital form.

I'll finish my Judell DuLong vs Nancy Hogle match before posting other goodies.  It was copied from the July 1974 edition of Wrestling Monthly.  The magazine cost me 75 cents...

I mentioned B&J Enterprises in my earlier posts.  The girl sitting on top is Lori.  Look at her legs on the second pic.  In the 70s, they sold photo sets.  The third pic is an example of what they used to promote the sale of these pics.

I mentioned that some producers hand wrote notes to their customers.  Judell DuLong for example.  Well, Sheri Whitlow also hand wrote her offerings in the 70s (photocopied).  Attached is an example of what she sent along with a nice glossy pic of her.  Like Judell, she gave very good descriptions of the combatants and the matches.  Once you read what she wrote, you wanted to see the pics...

I'm going to add a few of the lesser know producers that most of you have probably never even heard of.  I mentioned Soowandis in an earlier post.  It was a Canadian company from Toronto that produced wrestling and boxing films and photo sets in the mid 80s.  I just took a pic of the catalog cover to show you that it did exist.  The second pic is of Jamol Mantis from Waterloo, Ontario against Stacey Noble from Western Canada.  In the third pic, Jamol takes on Jan Del-Canto.  The last pic shows Stacey taking on Bobbie Simpson.  I like the descriptions of these matches. There are many other pics with other wrestlers, if you're interested, but I'll leave you with these for now.

Ever heard of the Sunshine Girls or Ringside Productions.  The first two are Sunshine Girls.  The others are Ringside Prod.  Both from the mid to end 80s when you could purchase VHS or BETA tapes.

NEWAWA Inc was around in the late 70s and early 80s.  It was from Torrington Connecticut.  It stands for New England Womens' Amateur Wrestling Association.  Well known wrestler Jo Bray and her husband Jeff published a number of brochures from NEWAWA, titled Grapevine.  They posted the results of tournaments, including the wrestlers' stats, duration of each match, who won and how.  Attached is an example of their Number 8 brochure, dated 1978.  The second pic shows examples of various fights.   I love the third pic.  The caption is self-explanatory.  Remember, this was 36 years ago...

Can you take two pictures of the article? One from each half so it shows up larger...

I would love to read this.

Interesting to see the advertising leaflet for Wrassle Mania this series of bouts were marketed in the U.K.but without too much success possibly due to most of the girls having taken part in a Festelle meeting in London where they fought topless. In fact Zory who is mentioned fighting Sherry made a lasting impression with fans with her superb trim and tanned body.
The other ad is of interest as it features Sheila the Spanish champion, another girl who featured in a Festelle show again topless.I may be insulting her but Sheila always looked a good bit older than the other girls.

Sounds like Sheri knows her audience! A nice personal touch, something quite amiss from today's world where an email can be fired off in seconds.

I've had correspondence with Francesca Le, Goldie Blair and other modern day fighters, but nothing beats a handwritten letter!

If there's one thing that the internet has been good for, it's being able to buy videos without the embarrassment of having to take it to the counter!

I remember well the adrenaline as I picked up a video. Who was looking? Who's on the counter? Are there any women around and what will they think?

You don't get that today, it's just numbers on a credit card.

if you're curious, this is how I gathered my memorabilia:

If anybody is interested, I can talk about my pre-teen years and how I found out about by fascination with female fighting, but I'd need to go back to 1965...  It begins with two women pro wrestlers on TV, in black and white, on a Saturday afternoon at my uncle's house.  But for the purposes of this thread, let's fast forward to the early 70s when I was about 13 or 14 years old.  Here's how it went down...

I'd save every penny of my measly allowance, and when I had enough money, I'd go to the local book store and browse the mainstream wrestling magazines, just in case I'd find something, anything, related to female wrestling.  I would sometimes buy one for 75 cents if there was something I liked.  Then, I'd start seeing the odd magazine with a picture of female wrestling on the cover (examples below).  I would not even browse it.  I'd grab it, buy it on the spot and literally run home to see what that article was about.  And then...  What's this?  Female wrestling companies with sexy girls, advertising the sale of pictures and movies, in my magazine (examples below).   Holy shit!!  Now I need five bucks and a stamp to order this stuff, like now.... Gotta ask dad for a raise in my allowance.

Picture this:  I'm about 13 years old, in my bedroom secretly cutting out clippings from wrestling magazines.  I'd place them on the bed, and figure out which one I could afford ordering this week. Then, once I had enough money, I'd go to the post office to buy a 5 dollar money order, stamp and envelope and would send it away pronto.  I had to wait weeks, if not months for my stuff to arrive.  Drove me nuts....  We lived in the country between 1969 and 1975, so the mail was delivered in our mail box at the end of the laneway.  Every day during the summer, there I was, the skinny kid checking for new mail.  When I saw the little flag raised on the mailbox, I'd take my scrawny legs and run up to the box all excited.  What? No mail for me...   Oh man?!!  There goes the rest of the day, down the crapper...  But if a Curtis Dupont or California Supreme envelope arrived, you'd think I won the lottery.

When I had to go to school, I'd obviously miss the odd mail run, and I remember getting caught at least once, by whom else but my mom.  She had picked up the mail and said something like "Hey, what's this girl wrestling stuff in an envelope addressed to you?" This is still a bit unclear in my mind as I almost passed out.  My face turning beet red, hands sweating profusely, and I think I said something like: "Uh? What?  I dunno.  It's nothing mom.  Ah. Um.  Er. Must have been sent to me by mistake.  Hey, I'm just a kid.  Why would I order stuff like that?  Here mom, let me get rid of it for you."  Not... If she threw it in the garbage, I'd pick it out, take it to my room and hide it with the rest of my "stash" in the closet, under my box of Hot Wheels.  Then I'd order more stuff.  Once some of these companies had you on their distribution list, they'd start sending you regular updates.  They didn't know or care whether or not the recipient was a 13-year old kid.   I just kept ordering more and more material and the letters with pamphlets, booklets, catalogs, just kept rolling in for several years.  Girls my age?  Who cares?  I got my little wrestling fantasy world going full bore with sexy women.  Well, until I reached 16 anyway...

As a side note, I should add that for the longest time, I was a huge fan of Raquel Welsh (check out her fight in the1966 movie, One Million Years B.C., then we'll talk).  I had three large posters of her in my bedroom, one in her One Million Years B.C. outfit (Google it...), one in a yellow bikini and another wearing a bikini that was patterned with the USA flag (her Myra Breckenridge era I believe).  I still have them rolled up in my basement, in perfect condition, after 40 years.  In 1972, she starred in a movie called Kansas City Bomber where she played a roller derby star.  There is a fight in that movie between her and her teammate rival, at night, in the grass, that I loved.  You could barely see them, but that was irrelevant.   All that mattered was that Raquel Welsh was fighting.  I bought the DVD last year just to bring back some memories, but watching it today doesn't feel at all the same as when I was 14.  We grow old, our standards change and besides, there are no limits to today's wrestling/catfighting world compared to 40 years ago.  As I'm going through my stuff in the basement, I recently found a scrapbook that I had kept with tons of clippings on Raquel Welch, including Kansas City Bomber stuff.   That was my world then...  And if you really want me to talk about my pre-teen years, let me know - they also involve Diana Rigg (anybody remember the Avengers?) and fantasies about my best friend's mom wrestling other women.

Anyway, when we moved back to the city in 1975 it got tricky, but I somehow managed to keep my secret obsession almost intact.  I got a part-time job as a parking attendant when I was about 15 or 16, and was able to rent a post office box.  So I was able to start ordering more expensive stuff, like the 1965 "Girl Wrestling" magazines (you could buy many "back issues" of magazines in those days) a couple of reel-to-reel 8mm movies from Judell DuLong's Amazon Club, the odd booklet or picture set and that's it for the 70s.  In the 80s, I had more income, so I bought three editions of the AMFEM Female Amateur Wrestling directories, several BETA and VHS tapes and most of the "porn" type magazines (Catspats, Cavalier, Claws, etc.) that I've been showing you in this thread.

So, I'll stop there and call this part 2 of my "early years" (age 13 to 16) of discovering and exploring my obsession, with the help of wrestling magazines and clippings that I'd send out.  Like I said earlier, part 1 (age 7 to 12) starts with a black and white TV wrestling match, then got a boost from my fantasies about my friend's mother and it just kept going from there.  Those were the days...

Cheers,

Wrstlvr

Quite a story. Sound like a similar journey to my own although i did not have the ability to buy and gather material until I left home at 18.  Small Town - Postman knew everyone and everything about you. Mail delivered directly to the house. No Wrestling magazines in the local stores; and, if there were, you did not want to buy it for fear that owner of the store would ask your Dad why the youngster was buying wrestling books. Moved to the big city and bought Wrestling Revue. Cavalier and Catspats were kept 'under the table' or in the 'back room'. It made one feel a little strange that what they were buying was sub-rosa.

Well, imagine if it was dificult for a fan before internet in USA, how hard it was for me here in Spain, buying reviews by posts and every day afraid about what would happen if the postman said something about my tastes to my mother, hehehe.

Very similar to my story too, but about ten years later. Lots of anxious checking of the mail. I think when I ordered Battling Girls I included a note that I hope that it would be shipped in a plain envelope because of my "live-in girlfriend". That must have been worth a laugh for someone.

It was about time that I added more memorabilia.  I'll start off with two CatSpats magazines that I found in an envelope under some VHS tapes.  I completely forgot that I had these.  One is from 1997, and the other from 1998.  They both contain pictures from the infamous Hellfire Club in New York.  I include a few pics from inside the magazines as well.

Hi all,

I've been quite busy, so I have not had much time to update my memorabilia.  Today, I'll show you some pics of my Golden Girls catalog.  Although I have other Golden Girls material that I may show you later, I received this catalog in August 1984.  I'll try something different today and we'll see how it works.  The pictures will be inserted instead of attached, so they will be much larger.  If you don't like these versions, I can revert back to simply attaching them.  Anyway, for those of you who do not know Golden Girls, it was a company from Valencia, California and the girl wrestled mostly in a ring, wearing bikinis.  Although the fights were staged, there was some good action for those days, and many well-known women wrestlers were part of the Golden Girls stable.  You may recognize Belinda Belle, Shelly and Renée from their early days. Very hot women, BTW.  Let's see if you agree....

I'll show you a few of my reel-to-reel movies.  Keep in mind, no sound, very noisy machine, expensive light bulb, wall projection, jerky picture, almost impossible to run without anyone hearing the projector fan (so no privacy unless you're alone in the house)...  You have no idea how we have it made today compared to those days...  Anyway, there was a company call Sceptre that made porn and catfights.  These are samples of what they produced, including one pic that shows what a reel-to-reel looked like.  I paid 40 bucks in the 70s for these.  Many films were going for 90 dollars.  An expensive fetish at that time...

These didn't come out right and strangely, I just lost the originals.  I'll take new pics and will post them shortly.  Sorry about this.

I'm sure most of you know Triumph Studios.   I have tons of stuff from them. I'll post them later.  Just for now, I am attaching their first bulletin, from 1975 after they bought off Milco and Pix Press.  Their bulletins and  newsletters were awesome, as you'll see later.  Very good marketing strategy.  However, in my opinion, the fights themselves were too staged for my taste, but some great female fighting legends came from there as you'll also see later.

How about some early Joan Wise material.  Her first "Fighting Femmes" newsletter was published in 1979.  Attached are copies of the covers of her first two newsletters.

OK then, I can only post small pics using the old method. My pics keep disappearing.  Very unfortunate and frustrating.

I'm going to post several pics from the first 6 Joan Wise's Fighting Femmes Newsletter, but only one pic per post to make sure that they don't disappear.

The first is a pic is from Newsletter 1 dated 1979.  It is a Special Pin Face Straddle Submission Match between Helen LustGarden and Jan Haefner who are both 5' 4" and weigh 140 lb.  Helen is the blonde on top.

The next two pics are from the second newsletter also dated 1979.  It is a match between tall amazons Deena Zarra and Velvet Rhodes.  I leave the text in the first pic so you can read the descriptions.  The second pic is a close-up of these huge woman, and the small woman in the middle is the one and only Joan Wise who was the referee of this match.  Deena on the left is 6' 3" and 185 lb while Velvet on the right is 6' and 185 lb.   Wow...

The next two pics are also from the second Newsletter.  The first is self-explanatory.  You can read it.  The second is only a pic (let me now if you want me to post the description) of Joan Wise versus Rita.  Joan weighs 115 lb in this match and she is the one applying the reverse headlock and body scissors combo to the heavier 130 lb Rita.

The first pic is the cover of the Number 4 Newsletter where Joan writes about how well the Fighting Femmes was doing and what her plans were for 1980.  I there is an interest, I can post every page of these newsletter, but I'll only provide these samples unless you ask for more.  The second pic is from this same newsletter.  It is between newcomers Terry Martin and Chris Taylor.  Terry is 5' 5" and weighs 140 lb.  She's the one applying the body scissors to 5' 8", 145 lb Chris.  I love Chris' legs...

The first pic is the cover of the Number 6 newsletter, dated 1980.  This was published the day before Joan was meeting Helen Lustgarten for the World Amateur Wrestling Championship (I'm going to guess here that this what they call Joan Wises's club's championship)  The second pic shows a couple of pics from two matches in this same newsletter.  The ladies on the left are 138 lb Genie St-James vs 126 lb Marcia Meyers.  Genie is the one applying the head scissors to Marcia.   The pic on the right is is a face straddle match between 138 Genie St-James and 140 lb Jan Haefner.  Jan is seen here face sitting Genie.

This picture is the back cover of Fighting Femmes Newsletter Number 5.  It contains pics of 125 lb Diana Davis going up against 135 lb Rita Jackson.  This was Diana's first match.  As you can see, Diana started very well, but Rita eventually gained control of Diana and won the match.

Great thread wrstlvr! I was a reader of AiA, Claws and FGM, and Wildcats. The picture is from Wildcats, I've got loads more I can submit.
A favorite of mine of Judell's girls was Karen Arnold, she was so cute!
And I know what you mean the embarrassment that could sometimes occur when buying these mags from shops. When I bought them if there were any customers in the shop, I'd browse the innocent looking mags till they'd gone, then buy the girl fight stuff, which used to greatly amuse the woman who owned the shop.

On my October 3 post, I showed you two pics of Impact Productions' sheets.  The pics of the women are too small, so I enlarged some of them for you so you can appreciate them.  This is quite old but I still find it very sexy.  These are amongst the first brochures that I ordered.  Although I got them in the early 70s, they look older.  Enjoy...

A big thanks to all of you who comment that you appreciate seeing this old material.  As I wrote earlier, I'd do a better job at presenting this if I have more time and was better organized.  Anyway, before I move on with some early Triumph Studios material, I thought that I'd get some of my Lady Hawke material off of my list of stuff to post.  If you like "everyday" type women and in many cases heavyset women, you'd enjoy Lady Hawke.  The matches are quite good and I am posting some early stuff from this company.  I forgot to mark the year on my file but this is likely mid to late 80s as these are video tapes, not reel-to-reels.  I'm posting 2 attachments per post and I have 9 pics to show you.

Two more from Lady Hawke, including a sample colour pic that they provided.  It was common in the 70s and 80s for companies to send pictures taken from a camera, as if you'd have taken the picture yourself.

Two more from Lady Hawke...  I should point out that Lady Hawke's owner was Brandy and she often wrestled against her daughter Dawn, another BBW.  There is one pic of them below.

This is the last Lady Hawke pic, for now anyway (depends what else I find in my boxes...).  As I mentioned above, these are heavier women.  In the tournament below, the lightest fighter weighs 137 lb. and the heaviest is 175 lb.  The average weight is in the 155 lb. range.

Several companies sold very good cartoons as well.  CSB (California Supreme - Bellstone) was one of them.  I can't recall who published the third attachment below.

In the third attachment the drawing on the bottom left is by a guy who was known as TG of Lincs, one of several pics in a story he did about a female prize fight in a 19th century village. TG did quite a bit of work for Amazons in Action, including its earlier version, i.e. before the mags name was changed to AiA. Can't offhand remember the mags earlier title.

Hi Bear,

I also enjoyed Lady Hawke matches.  I have a few VHS tapes at home.  I believe that Brandy weighed around 165 lb in the early days (just look at the pic with her autograph).  She did gain quite a few pounds over the years and I'm pretty sure that she weighed over 200 lb in her later matches.  Most of Brandy's matches on the Net show her when she was heavier.  I recall a match in which she fought another BBW who looked older than her. I really liked the ending; it was like a crucifix, but not a cross body pin.  Her opponent had short blond hair and wore a black one-piece.  When I find a pic, I'll post it here...

I had that match on VHS, but it got erased by mistake.  Brandy's opponent was named Mary.  The actual match can be found on Youtube.  Mary filmed at least one other match, I believe that it was a topless match against a younger Dakota.

I recall going to some mud wrestling venues and the girls were parading and flirting with the men before their fights, especially when the events were held in strip joints.  I remember going to discos, clubs, fairs to see mud wrestling in the 80s.  It was fun to watch and was quite common.

I spent way too much on the Triumph vhs tapes back in the late 80s-early 90s. They did have beautiful girls (well, some of them, anyway) even if their actual matches were less than inspiring. I think one reason I ordered so much from them was that they were honest and if there was a problem they'd try to fix it. Can't say that for every company I ordered from back then.
I recently boxed up most of my old Triumph tapes and gave them to a fellow fan. I still have a huge stack of black and white photos from those matches - I think there was some kind of sale and I wound up with maybe 200 photos for $20 or something like that. The internet has made it so easy to access all kinds of catfight sources that I forget just how hard it was to be a fan back in the day. Love this thread!

I will continue to post many flyers, but I also have a huge pile of wrestling magazines mostly from the 70s and 80s that have some interesting articles.  Although the magazines focus on pro wrestling, many of the underground companies used them to promote their products, not only with ads, but also articles (California Supreme, Judell DuLong"s Amazons, Triumph Studios come to mind).  I already posted one from Judell DuLong earlier in this thread.  So, I haven't finished browsing yet, and I already put about 50 magazines aside and I will take pics of what I want to share with you.  I'll start with this article that I extracted from the October 1977 edition of Wrestling Revue (in mint condition BTW).  The article is titled "In Defence of Amateur Women Wrestlers", and although it doesn't promote a commercial supplier of female wrestling, it lists some of the "bona fide organizations" for female amateur wrestlers that many of us are already familiar with, such as AWWA and NEWAWA.  The article is short, but there is a decent array of pictures of unknown wrestlers (unknown to me at least).  Hope you enjoy it.  I will separate it in two or three posts depending on how many will be allowed per post.  I will post other similar articles as often as I can.

These are two more pages from the article in the previous post.  I could make the pics larger so you could read the text more easily, but I tried earlier and most of those somehow disappeared even though they were within the maximum size allowed.  I could attach one pic per post if you wish.  That could work, but that means lots of individual posts.  If I don't hear any feedback, I'll assume that these sizes are OK.

Before I continue with more memorabilia, I'd like to pause and talk about one of my favorite female pro wrestlers of the 70s.  My dad was a huge pro wrestling fan and in my early years, he would bring me to local pro wrestling events (wrestling was as popular in Canada as in the US in the 60s and early 70s, especially in Quebec).  I always enjoyed it and kept following it for decades.  I still have some ads promoting the matches and handouts that they gave out at the venues.  There weren't many women's wrestling matches, but I did see some.  Being from the province of Quebec, we had one wrestler in particular who was very popular in the 70s.  Those of you who followed pro wrestling in the 70s have certainly heard of her.  She even starred in a docu-movie titled "Wrestling Queen".  Her name was Viviane Vachon.  She was the sister of Mag Dog Vachon, a tough, mean heel and she had quite a following in Quebec.  She was not a hot diva like you see in today's WWE, but she was charismatic, and I found her very sexy.  Like her brother, Viviane was also a heel – she was mean and tough.   The reason I mention her is that I found some newspaper clippings that I had kept from the early 70s some that showed her modelling some swim wear, one that talked about her singing debut, and one in particular that I'd like to share with you.

Other than being a huge fan of hers in the 70s, I'd like to point out the newspaper clipping below that I kept, dated July 3, 1972 (third attachment).  For you non-francophones, any guess on what she was protesting?  I'll tell you by translating what the sign she's holding up says: "Women also fight for a living".  Um, 'scuse me?  Hello?  Look at the sign guys, not her sexy legs...  Now where was I?  Oh yeah, now I remember; I will translate the caption that you see below the picture just to put this in perspective:

"Viviane Vachon, professional wrestler and sister of the Vachon brothers who are also wrestlers protested yesterday (July 2, 1972) in front of Montreal's City Hall.  She was protesting against a municipal law that prohibits women from performing wrestling shows in public.  Her placard indicates that women also fight for a living."

Well, you gotta give her props for standing up for women's rights to wrestle in public events...  She was certainly an advocate who made a difference in the advancement of female pro wrestling, in Canada anyway...  It's so sad that she died in 1991 in a car accident at the young age of 40 along with her 9-year old daughter when a drunk driver who ran a stop sign hit her car near Montreal.

I'm am amazed at how much stuff I kept.  Talk about a pack rat.  You should see my Raquel Welch scrap book and posters (remember her fight in "One Million Years, B.C." and her roller derby character in "Kansas City Bomber" - she also has a fight with a rival teammate in that movie.  I even bought the DVD a couple of years ago.)

Your memorabilia of Vivian Vachon conducting her one-woman protest reminds me that the state of California (yeah, that left-wing, ultra-liberal state) prohibited women's wrestling for many years.  Following the death of a woman wrestler named Janet Boyer Wolfe in 1951, the state outlawed women's professional wrestling, even though professional wrestling was legally dubbed as a "wrestling exhibition,"  meaning that everyone in the state legislature knew that this stuff was choreographed.  The prevailing political and social attitudes were that the "weaker sex" was not fit to engage in that sort of physical activity.  BTW, women's boxing (though virtually non-existent) was legal.  Imagine that!  It wasn't until the late 1960's that the ban was repealed, and women were once again allowed to pursue, and earn money, as pro wrestlers.  One of the first matches to happen was a tag match between Toni Rose and Donna Christanello vs. Joyce Grable and (I believe) Susan Green.  I was there, at the Cow Palace, in San Francisco in 1969 (or maybe it was 1970) to watch.  I found the match to be of much greater historical significance than the anti-war protests that I watched daily as a student across the Bay.

The only thing that topped that was my pilgrimage to the Hollywood Tropicana in 1985 to take in an evening of oil and mudwrestling.  Oh whatta nite!

Thank you for sharing all of the pictures. Brings back a lot of memories. I still have a lot of magazines such as She Fights and Catspats. I have a lot of old VHS tapes as well. I remember a company called 4-F Films that featured wrestling and catfighting. I tried to order a tape from them once but my money was returned with a letter stating that the owner of the company had passed away. I remember in the She Fights magazine they had films and picture sets for sale. I never did get the chance to order from them. Did anyone ever buy anything from them? Just curious.

Hey Gary, you mention 4-F films.  Here's part of the catalogue that I have.  I'll have to check the year if anyone's interested, but this catalogue was the second edition.  Goes way back.

Oh, and you commented on one of the pics in my main profile (the one with the mature couple wrestling).   I'll pm you a pic of just the women fighting.  It is not sexy, but quite interesting.  Just shows the extent of who is into this activity...

Cheers,

Thank you so much for posting the 4-F Films images. I wish I could have seen a few of their movies.

One thing that I liked about Judell DuLong and her Amazons was that she sent samples of individual photos of her fighters and of the matches.  I believe that I posted a few in this thread. I have a few dozen pics at home.  Here are a couple of obscure companies that also sent individual pics.  One was a company called Wrestling International and I placed a pic on top of the descriptive sheets that they provide.

The other was basically one woman named Jane and her husband who managed the company.   I have only one pic and I placed it on top of one of the sheets that she sent me.  The last pic is a close-up of the pic featuring Jane.

More goodies to follow.

Was born in mid 70's, so missed out on the real early stuff, would love if the older fans post what 70-80's companies filmed real competitive wrestling, boxing or catfight matches?   Was it mostly scripted and pro style back in the day?
After I found the good mid 90's competitive producers like DWW, I gave away all my GG, DT, CaliWildcat and Napoli VHS videos :)
Now wish I could go back and check out more of the older producers that never got to see. Some many of those matches will never be seen again. Wish we could set up a way to store peoples collections and save as many matches as we can. Maybe can get a storage locker and split the cost? I'd hate to think of my collection being thrown out and no one can enjoy some of the rare matches I have after I'm gone.

To colt 45, coyote, floor and anyone else wondering what happened to the pics of my collection, as well of the collections of other members, on this thread.

I have some bad news...  Please go the "Board News and General Announcements" thread and look at "Site outage".  As a result of a major outage, it appears that the FCF has lost a number of pics, our avatars being the most obvious.  I will assume for now that the outage has also removed all the pics that I posted in this thread.  Problem is, it was a lot of work for me to take the pictures, crop them, adjust the brightness, etc., then right-size them to fit only a few pics per post.  I had posted several dozen pics and don't have the time to repost all of them.  The best I can do is respond to requests for particular pics that you would like to see, and we'll see how that goes.

I'll report the loss of the pics that were on this thread to the administrators, but I doubt that they can be reinserted from that end.

Sorry... :(

Pity about the lost pics, I've got old magazines, I'll submit some pics if I get time.

But you've reminded me of my youth wrstlvr. In the seventies I thought I was the only one in the world who liked cat fighting, till I found a Swish magazine in a newsagent. Then Wildcats was published in the eighties, one of the best girl fights mags ever. And as for Judell du Longs Camp Amazon, Karen Arnold was my favourite, I was in love with her. In fact, I still am! And I saw in these mags the art work of Eneg, Stanton, Ram and others, which inspired me to learn to draw, so I could illustrate my own fantasies.
