The entire blog is quite interesting. Thanks for the tip.
There was a documentary about this with a really good fight scene at the end i'll have a look and see if I can find a link to it
The tradition continues to this day, in parts of England.
I remember reading a feature in a magazine [possibly Penthouse} about bare knuckle/all-in fights in the West country [Cornwall,Devon]. The girls were mostly farm girls/country dwellers and topless or nude. No weapons were used; and the fights were normally in barns, with the "ring" being bales of straw. The fights were not publicised, to avoid the attention of the local police. The feature had pictures, showing blood, bruises etc, to the faces and bodies of the participants
I believe similar fights took place in the north-west, around Manchester and in Cheshire, and probably still do - although I never got to see any, despite all my best efforts.
Not normally as "structured" as the bare knuckle boxing matches held under the the ever popular "London Prize Ring Rules"....
Which themselves were pretty brutal.....the ones between farm girls.... "ladies of the evening".....and others were very much unstructured
As GG said....back alleys....barns.......the "rookeries" of London
OK...who's first?......I'm game :)
I seem to remember the "blacksea catfights" started out as a small group of women fighting in a club, an at some point someone convince them the could make money recording and sailing there fights
