It looked like something from the early 1980s. The plot revolved around a woman wrestler who was dating a newspaper reporter documenting her career. Anybody seen it?

I think that your BF is correct. There are lots of clips on Youtube (in fact, I just ran across one a couple of days ago) and the complete movie is available for viewing as well. IMO, better material abounds elsewhere.

New York Nights has a great catfight scene in a ring and matches with what the OP is describing. First saw it in college and it made a huge impression.
